What is Depth Psychology?
An Introduction

Depth psychology is devoted to looking below the surface of our lives. Most of us go about our daily lives without taking the time or making the effort to consider what is happening to us at a deeper level. Exploration of this inner world drew Freud and Jung--and many modern psychotherapists--to their work. We explore these depths in ourselves when we stop to ponder our lives. Perhaps we have an interesting and unexpected dream, or we think of someone just as they call or we find ourselves wondering about the far reaches of human connection. We may be moved by a moment of deep communion with nature or art or another person. Sometimes we are even drawn into consideration of our inner world as a result of pain, disappointment, or illness. In whatever way we come to take this step of inner exploration, through this process we can catch a glimpse of a layer of our lives that we often take for granted. There is great wisdom in these depths. Taking the time to open ourselves to this level of experience can lead to a strong sense of peace. We come to know that we are leading the life we were meant to live. Eventually, an awareness of ourselves as precious beings arises when we look deeper.
